Focused skill preparation

IELTS Reading Preparation

Read strategically, locate reliable evidence and make well-timed decisions across Academic or General Training texts.

Core preparation areas

Move efficiently between overview and detail.

Skimming

Read titles, headings, opening lines and structural signals to understand the topic, organisation and direction of a text.

Scanning

Search for names, dates, distinctive terms and related concepts without reading every sentence at the same speed.

Evidence and paraphrases

Match question language to differently worded evidence and confirm an answer from the text rather than memory or assumption.

Time management

Set sensible checkpoints, move on from one difficult item and leave enough time to complete and check the full paper.

Task approaches

Let each question type guide your evidence search.

Read the instructions precisely, identify what must be matched or judged and return to the relevant part of the text. Use practice review to separate vocabulary gaps from problems with evidence location or task interpretation.

Useful distinctions

  • For True/False/Not Given, separate contradiction from missing information
  • For matching tasks, compare the full meaning rather than one shared word
  • For headings, identify the main purpose of a paragraph
  • For completion tasks, check grammar and word limits
  • For multiple choice, test every option against textual evidence
